However, more men needed to be fed as the War progressed, and the German\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #ffcc99;\">blockade on Allied ships created shortages<\/span><span>\u00a0affecting not only the civilian population but the military as well. Cookhouses were established behind the lines, and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #ffbe48;\">ration parties were sent<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #ffbe48;\">to retrieve daily rations<\/span><span>. The\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #ffbe48;\">main railway stations and central depots<\/span><span>\u00a0were situated some\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #ffbe48;\">10 to 15 miles behind the lines<\/span><span>\u00a0and divisional dumps and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #ffbe48;\">cookhouses about 7 miles from the front<\/span><span>.
