Weekend Docent and Collection Support

The Canadian Centre for the Great War, a Montréal based non-profit heritage and research centre focusing on Canadian experience of the First World War operated by The Vimy Foundation, is seeking a volunteer to work as the Weekend Docent and Collection Support. Reporting to the Collections Manager and/or Projects Coordinator, the volunteer will assist in providing museum tours and support for the museum collection, including some research, writing, cataloging and may participate in larger projects such as inventory, exhibitions etc. This position will start in January 2023.

Responsibilities

  • Provide tours for weekend visitors and any groups that had booked tours
  • Complete research and/or writing on various topics on the First World War
  • May assist in processing artefacts for cataloging and/or inventory, including photography, measuring, data entry

 

Requirements

  • Excellent communication and people skills, with ability to work under limited supervision
  • Strong technological literacy in computers and/or devices with effective skills in digital workspaces such as Microsoft (word, excel) and/or Google (doc, spreadsheet) and photo editing applications
  • Some previous experience with artefact or antiques handling is prefered;
  • Previous experience in research, writing, and/or cataloging an asset
  • Interest in gaining experience or have background in public history, museology, information science
  • Availability on Saturday from 11 am – 3 pm
