Workshop Overview

This 50-minute workshop provides students with an engaging exploration of soldiers’ daily lives in the trenches during the First World War.

Through the combination of an interactive presentation and hands-on activity, students will deepen their understanding of the conditions on the Western Front. Guided discussions, historical images, and direct engagement with artifacts offer a dynamic and tangible approach to learning about this pivotal period in history.

Workshop Structure

Presentation:
Life in the Trenches

This 15-minute presentation introduces students to the daily realities of life in the trenches during the First World War. Through a structured, interactive lecture supported by historical images and discussion prompts, students will explore five key aspects of trench life: trench construction and design, trench warfare, food and rations, disease and hygiene, and leisure activities.

This session offers historical context while encouraging student participation and critical thinking about the lived experiences of soldiers on the Western Front.

Hands-On Activity:
Identify that Artifact!

Following the presentation, students will take part in a hands-on activity designed to reinforce and extend their learning. Working in small groups, participants will examine a selection of First World War artifacts. Their task is to identify each object and determine its historical function, recording their answers on a provided worksheet.

The activity concludes with a guided review of the correct answers, encouraging reflection and discussion.

Learning Outcomes

This workshop supports students in developing historical thinking through a focused exploration of life in the trenches during the First World War. Through historical images, guided discussions, and hands-on interaction with authentic artifacts, students will gain a deeper understanding of both the strategic realities and the human experiences of trench warfare.

Students are also encouraged to consider the importance of historical preservation and the role of museums, archives, and local institutions in keeping the memory of the First World War alive.
